Obsidian Bases + Books Notes = Obsidian Library 📚
I love reading books & taking notes on what I’m reading. Book notes help me retain the key quotes, concepts, and ideas from my favourite books.
As more and more books are added to my digital library, these book notes began to get cluttered & disconnected. It became harder to find my specific book notes and to maintain the connection between the quotes and the books they came from.
I wanted a way to organize my book notes and all of the quotes related to them in a single place, a home base for my books.
Thankfully, Obsidian excels at maintaining connection between atomic notes (like quotes) and the sources they came from.
Obsidian Bases takes this connectivity one step further, turning your Obsidian vault into a database, your book notes into a library.
Welcome to my Obsidian Books Base Starter Kit (Library) 🚀✨
To help manage my increasing library of book notes in Obsidian, I have developed a new Books Base using the Obsidian Bases Core Plugin (now available for everyone!) that pairs perfectly with the Book Search Plugin & Obsidian Web Clipper Extension.
Set up your Books Base & Templates once, and then have your book notes organized automatically, forever, inside of your Obsidian Vault.
Use the Book Search Plugin to find books, automatically pulling the metadata (author, genre, page number, etc) along with the cover image to be beautifully displayed inside of your Books Base.
Use the Web Clipper Goodreads template to extract the information from the Internet and automatically create a templated book note that is displayed perfectly in your Books Base.
Then, as you take notes, extract your favourites using the Quote Template to be displayed in your Map of Book, an embedded Bases view in your main Book Notes Templates. Embedded Bases views let you dynamically pull in the name of your book notes to automatically display only the quotes that related to that book, giving you an at a glance view of your favourite quotes from that book or genre.
Optionally, you can then choose to publish your quotes to your website or digital garden (see my digital garden Creative Act book note as an example).
The core files in this bundle are:
I’ve designed the system to be modular, so you can pick and choose the style you resonate with most, knowing that the pieces are all interconnected automatically through the incredible Bases Plugin. The goal of this system is for you to have a starting point to build out your own book tracking systems. You do not need to use all aspects of the system for it to be effective, the design is completely up to you!
Note: Bases has been released to everyone 🎉 Make sure your Obsidian is updated to at least version 1.9.10 to get the Bases Core Plugin.
